Emily Mann: A Celebration

A Virtual and Live Season of Plays by an American Icon

In our upcoming season, PCTC will celebrate Emily Mann and present a year-long retrospective of some of her most iconic plays. As a playwright, director, and artistic director of the McCarter Theatre for 30 years, Ms. Mann and her work have been honored with a Tony Award, a Peabody Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and eight Obie awards, among many other accolades.In 2019, Ms. Mann was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame. PCTC believes there are few theatre artists whose works reflects more passionately the tumultuous times we are living through. As Joseph W. Rodriguez (PCTC producing artistic director) says: “Like all great works of art, Emily’s plays are timeless and timely. Some were written over forty years ago, and, yet, they show us ourselves in the very moment we live in– NOW.”

Each play (event) will be a benefit for social justice organizations related to each play’s major issues(s)

Execution of Justice

Crafted entirely from trial transcripts, reportage, interviews with politicians, police, family members and every-day people effected by the events, EXECUTION OF JUSTICE explores the 1979 murder trial of Dan White and the traumatic aftermath of the assassination of San Francisco mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk ( the first openly gay elected official in the history of California).

This skillful revival directed by Mark Armstrong confronts ongoing issues of racism, homophobia, sexism, and truth-telling in the lives of ordinary humans, chronicling the political violence that divided a city, and continues to divide America – as well as the possibilities of change.
